Longer Growing Seasons Cause Hydrological Regime Shifts in Central European Forests

چکیده

In this study, we present evidence for a hydrological regime shift in upland central European forests. Using combination of long-term data, detailed field measurements and modelling, show that there is prolonged persistent decline annual runoff:precipitation ratios most likely linked to longer growing seasons. We performed long term (1950–2018) water balance simulation Czech forest headwater catchment calibrated against measured streamflow transpiration from deciduous coniferous stands. Simulations were corroborated by (1965–2018) borehole historical drought reports. A positive negative balances occurred the early part century. Since 2007, have been below average. Annual average temperatures increased, but no notable trends precipitation. 1980, has pronounced April warming, leading earlier leaf out higher transpiration, making unavailable runoff generation and/or soil moisture recharge. Our results suggest due second order effects climate change where increased associated with season leads light limitation This will require new approaches managing forests previously not problem.

Newly discovered landscape traps produce regime shifts in wet forests.

We describe the "landscape trap" concept, whereby entire landscapes are shifted into, and then maintained (trapped) in, a highly compromised structural and functional state as the result of multiple temporal and spatial feedbacks between human and natural disturbance regimes. The landscape trap concept builds on ideas like stable alternative states and other relevant concepts, but it substantiv...

Alpha and Beta Diversity in Central European Beech Forests

Recently, the beech forests of southern Central Europe (including large parts of the Illyrian region) have been syntaxonomically revised, using a TURBOVEG database containing more than 5800 relevés, mainly from Austria, Switzerland, Germany, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia and Croatia. The same TURBOVEG database was used to calculate patterns of alpha and beta diversity within beech fores...
